France weather

France is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Europe. No matter what weather conditions are, it is always brimming with visitors from all over the world throughout the year. The country holds a romantic air and ambience for all ages and is preferred most by most newly-wed young couples. It is not just the air, its people are also known for their passionate romance in their bloodline.
To experience French love and its lovely people, it is mandatory to know country’s weather before packing your bags and booking your trip.

France spans on an area of 547,030 km2 and with its huge area it is mainly divided into four climatic zones: Oceanic climatic region in northwest and west, Semi-continental region in northeast, Mediterranean climatic region in south and southeast and Mountainous climatic region comprising of the Alps, Massif Central and Pyrenees. All these zones exhibit diverse variations in weather conditions due to country’s span over a range of latitudes and longitudes.

Weather in the North and Northwest

In the capital city of Paris, springs are comparatively dry and mild with chances of rainfall. Temperature variates between 20 degrees Celsius to 26 degrees Celsius from May till October. Between these months, summers prevail with July through August as the hottest time period. Though it rains lowest in this region, you can still expect it any time throughout the year. There is a possibility of thunderstorms in summer season but it is guaranteed to occur in October which is considered as the rainiest month with an average rainfall of 71 mm. The capital region and surroundings are the coldest in January with average maximum of 6 degrees Celsius.

In the northwest of France, just four hours from Paris, is Brittany which receives heaviest rainfall from October to November. Breton, which lies further in the west with 6 hour drive from Paris is the driest in July.

Weather in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Coast

The south Mediterranean coast is the most arid climatic zone as compared to other regions of France. If any rain, it comes in the spring and autumn season. The coastline including Corsica are sunniest with cool breeze from the sea in summer season. On an average, mercury reaches to a maximum of 27 degrees Celsius in August with 12 hours a day of sunshine. Mean number of dry days in any month of summer is approximated between 25 to 30 days.

It rains throughout the year in the Atlantic coast including Bordeaux. In general, it experiences mild weather conditions with mean temperature of 11 degrees Celsius during winters and 27 degrees Celsius during summers. Autumns are sunny and winters are relatively damp. These climatic conditions is one of the major reasons behind the quality and fame of Bordeaux’s wineries.

Weather in Mountainous French Alps

As a part of Alps mountain range, the French Alps and the Jura Mountains also see varying weather conditions in its different sub regions. Savoy is exposed to plentiful of rainfall all year around resulting in lower temperatures and even heavy snow. Just near the border with Italy, Braincon experiences a mean minimum of -2 degrees Celsius in winter months and a mean maximum of 17 degrees Celsius in summer months. It is dry and mild with winds emerging from its beautiful valleys. These winds get warm in the afternoon causing formation of dark clouds above the mountainous tops. If storms arrive, they can be violent as well as mighty.

The south of Alps including Provence and Cote D’Azur experience a rather Mediterranean weather. It receives ample sunshine. With no mist and rare moist, it is generally a dry weather. Autumn is ranked as the best period in the Alps region. Sporadic storms are a possibility that can be wild and violent but their aftermath soon vanishes followed by sunny days.

Popular towns and destinations in French Alps include Chamonix, Savoy, Dauphine, Grenoble, Annecy, Chambery and Albertville. These areas are famous among tourists for its numerous snow activities throughout the year. In winters, it has remarkable snow for skiing, snowboarding, glacier walking and ice diving. In summer season, you can do hiking, climbing, biking and bungee jumping.
